This Litter is Certified NCL CLEAR. And it is a mix of CLEAR and CARRIER for PRA. Ruby is Certified NCL CLEAR and is a CARRIER for PRA and Preston is Certified CLEAR for both. For details on what this means see DASHaHOUND GUARANTEE.
This litter is a Ralines sired line. They either are English Cream or they carry for it (depending on which puppy). They all have over 30 champions in their 6 generation pedigree.
We kept Ruffy, BooBoo and Ebony from this litter. To learn more about which puppies are full English Cream and which are half read the following paragraphs.
Puppies 8 weeks

This concludes the 8 week history of the Ruby/Preston litter (1).
What a wonderful litter. Note the color changes over time. Ruffy and Ginger will continue to change. Ginger should become deeper red with that great black shading and Ruffy will continue to lighten up like Preston but possibly with a little more shading then dad. I expect the others to remain about the same. Ebony ended up with cream/tan points. Next to Harley (our black & Cream Male) she is Black and tan, next to Pepper (our black and tan female) she is black and cream. I believe she is black and tan carrying for cream and that is how we will register her. If she has an all cream litter later, we will correct her registration to black and cream.
Ginger and Gidget are celebtrating their 8 week birthday in NY at their new home with Ray and Joanne.

Wow that flash makes my eyes blue, cool. Relaxing on the counter. Do you guys miss us? Nap time in New York. I think there is a snack up there if I could reach it.

OK, where are Gidget and Ginger? They were just here and I want to play. I think I will howl, that usually works.
****
Too busy with her toy to be concerned. Hey, where ARE the girls? New York? I am not really a howler Ruffy but if you think it might help!

7 Weeks old and they are all action now. Hard to get a picture without a blur.
****
Gidget and Ginger, these two girls get more beautiful each day. Inquisitive and full of play they are personality plus. They go to their new home in NY next week. We will dearly miss them.

Ruffy. Notice how light I am getting. I am going to be handsome, just like Dad.
****
Hey Ebony, watch me jump off the table!" "On second thought it is a long way down" "Are you nuts Boo Boo? I think I will back up a step"

Puppies 6 weeks

Ray and Joanne's little darlings. The biggest change in the 5 week - 6 week age is the activity level, not the looks. It is very hard to get good pictures because they are now FAST. Notice their focus and alertness.
****
These little girls are turning out beautifully. Note how cream colored Gidget is and look at the unbelieveable shading on Ginger's face. Both are registered as "red" females but look how different they are. We are going to miss them.

Ruffy, ever on the alert and ready to turn on a dime. I've got my eye on you!
****
Champagne's the name but Roberta calls me Boo Boo, sigh. What's a girl to do? Ebony, stacked and ready to show (well almost stacked and almost ready).

Starting with Ray and Joanne's first picks we have:
******
Gidget, happy and full of life, she wags her tail when she sees Roberta coming. Ginger, WHAT a beautiful FACE. Look at that color.
Roberta is attached to Autumn and Ruffy already. It will be hard to say goodbye. I still can't tell if she will be deep shaded red or cream. The cream is fighting to come out.
This little guy may become available. We are deciding if we are going to keep him. We will decide when he is 10-12 weeks.

Ruffy! I expect him to be even better than his dad. That is what we all try for but don't always achieve.
These last two are the two we are planning to keep.
***
Champagne. Sorry, just starting a big yawn. Awww, now for a nap. Ebony. Aren't I pretty?? Want to see my profile???
I looked at 100 websites yesterday and never saw a litter that looked this nice!!! Yes, I am prejudiced but come on. Mostly there are 5 puppies that all look alike. Look at this diversity. Good Job Preston and Ruby!!

Puppies 3 weeks

Now that they have their eyes open we felt it was time to give them some temporary names instead of puppy 1 and puppy 2, etc. So we went with something to describe their color, except for Ruffy the little boy. You would just have to ask Roberta about that one.
Remember the camera adds red and darkens all the colors. You can see the difference in the same puppy between two pictures. Starting with Ray and Joanne's likely first picks we have:
******
Gidget. She is a beautiful Golden color. Ginger for her beautiful Auburn color. I voted for Jane (as in Jane Russell)
The second picture is more true to her color but still adds a reddish tint. I did poorly on this picture. Bad lighting. But she is a doll!!
You should have acted back then. He was available but now I think we are leaning towards keeping him.
Ruffy! Notice how he is already lightening as his cream color comes out. He will likely end up about the same color as Preston, with perhaps a little more black shading.
These last two are the two we are planning to keep.
******
Champagne. Notice the difference in the two pictures. Picture 1 is more accurate. Ebony. Here too the picture on the left looks like cream points and the one
I voted for Marilyn (as in Marilyn Monroe) here but lost again. on the right looks like tan points. The left is more accurate.

Puppies 8 days
The puppies are arranged in order of birth, starting with the oldest on the right (it was left to the arranger who was standing behind them). Puppy 1 far right was the first born. She looks like she will end up a deep red with black shading. Puppy 2 next to her is a boy (the only one). He may look grey or brown to you but that is typical of the English Cream look at birth. The black over lay shows prominently but the cream undercoat comes out as they mature. He looks quite similar to the first puppy now and looked exactly like her at birth but they should change over time. Her red undercoat will come out and his cream undercoat will come out and they will end up looking totally different. Puppy 3, the girl in the middle is a golden color. Depending on your monitor she may have a reddish tint. On my laptop she is golden cream and on my external she is reddish gold. Live she is more like my laptop color. Notice how much less red she looks in the 8 day picture than the 2 day picture. She has not changed at all, it is up to the camera. We are waiting to see if she will be red or cream. Puppy 4, the next puppy is ee cream, very light. Note her nose has already turned black though. This is the sign of the English cchcch cream vs. the American D dilute cream. The EC does not act on black, only red and the tan points of a black and cream. The D dilutes the red but also the black, so the nose and nails are not the solid black of the EC. In a cream, not having black nose and nails is a sign the dilution is the D not the cch. Puppy 5, last but not least. As you can see, the points of the puppy are hard to pick. They could be cream or a light tan. Time will tell. I have seen puppies incorrectly called black and cream because these points were very light and cream colored. To be a true black and cream the puppy must have cream from both parents. If you know up front one of the parents is not cream and does not carry for cream you know the puppy is a B & T and cannot be a cchcch because one parent had no cch allele to give it. The puppy is Ccch. To be black and cream it must be a cchcch puppy, not a Ccch puppy. They may look a lot alike and for pet purposes it really doesn't matter. The difference is when they are used for breeding. A black and cream puppy is a full English Cream. Bred to another cchcch EC dog will produce 100% EC puppies. A black and tan which carries cream and LOOKS black and cream will produce only 50% EC when bred to another. When one parent is cream and the other carries for cream it is hard to tell for sure. The looks can be deceiving and the only way to know for sure is to breed the dog and look at the litter. If you breed to EC and get even one red or black and tan puppy the parent is a B & T carrying for cream, not a B & C.

Wow. This litter was more than we could have hoped for. What color!!! At first it appeared they were all English Creams. This would have been very unlikely since Ruby is 50% red and 50% English Cream. The normal mix for a 5 puppy litter would be half red and half cream. Also a 3/2 mix of males vs. females would be normal. We got a 1/4 mix and the 4 were females. Since we plan to keep most of the females for our breeding program this was a particular blessing. Between our need and those of our friends many of these puppies are spoken for.
No matter what you may see advertised on some sites, there is no such thing as a 3/4 English Cream. The gene known as the Chinchilla gene causes the color which is commonly called English Cream. The alleles which control this process are C = no Chinchilla and cch = Chinchilla. A puppy inherits a single whole allele from each parent. These two alleles determine the trait in the dog. The only possible combinations are no allele for the trait = 0%, 1 allele for the trait = 50% and 2 alleles for the trait = 100%. Preston is 100% EC (cch, cch) so he gives each puppy an English Cream allele (cch). Ruby is half English Cream (C,cch) so she gives one English Cream cch allele to one puppy and one no English Cream dilution C to the next and so forth. A dog can not pass a partial allele, it is all on none.
In a normal mix one puppy would get cchcch (100% English Cream) and the next Ccch (50% - A Red puppy who carries for English Cream). So far I believe the puppy pictured below at the bottom is cchcch 100% EC whereas the puppy to the back right is C,cch 50% EC or red carrying for English Cream. If you look at both puppies above they look very close in color. Below one looks much redder than the other. In person one does not appear to have any red in her at all. Time will tell soon enough. The red puppy will get redder and the almost black cream puppy will turn cream with a black shading. In a couple of months they should look completely different. As far as color goes, the more red puppy should be the color of Ruby (maybe a little darker) and the darker puppy more like Preston (perhaps a little more shading). But only time will tell us for certain.
So when the first two were the typical black shaded color of the English Cream (born almost black then they show the cream later) and the next two were light cream and then lighter cream we were surprised.
The final puppy was Black with points. It is still too early to say what color those points are but they do not appear tan at this point. For those of you who are not familiar with English Creams, a Black and Cream dog is also 100% English Cream. The cch "Chinchilla" allele which causes the cream color only acts on red hair of a red dog and on the tan points of a black and tan, it has no effect on black.
So, where were the red puppies we expected???? Ahhh what a day or two can bring. The first born little girl is starting to show a deep red tint below all that black overcoat and the first Golden cream may be showing red tint. I say may because it is really hard to see any tint up close but the camera has a way of picking out the red. The photo above was taken in bright sunlight with no flash and the red is much more apparent than it is live. It is possible the camera actually adds a little red but I don't think this is the case here. I think we have a deep red female, a shaded cream male, a cream puppy which will either turn more red or more cream over the next few days, an ee pale cream and a black and tan or cream which also will be decided in a few days.
The additional pictures are offered to show the comparison of the colors and early conclusions.

This photo helps pick out the reds. Note the shaded puppy in the back vs. the shaded puppy in the front. The one in the back clearly looks red whereas the one in the front does not. It is hard to tell with these photos on computer monitors. My laptop shows very little red in any of the puppies whereas my external monitor shows much more red. This is really true of the little red/cream looking girl on the left. She is very cream live and on my laptop but quite red on my external monitor. What it does tell us is the ee cream and the shaded cream male in the foreground have no red at all at this point on any of my monitors so it is safe (so far) to say one is shaded cream and one is light cream. The ee confuses the issue since it removes all black pigment from the puppy.

Here is a closeup of the little black girl. As you can see it is hard to tell what color her points are but my guess is they will be cream.
So, as I see it, we have 3 creams, one light, one shaded and one black and cream. We have one deep red and one light red or possibly cream. Anyway you look at it the color is awesome.
Ruby and Preston Litter arrived January 13th

"RUBY" at 8 weeks "PRESTON" at 8 weeks
Dash of Ruby Doxhunds Dash of Cream Eclair
Shown here as 8 week puppies to give you an idea what your puppy might look like about the age you bring it home. You can learn more about either parent on their own page and also see them in action in the slide flash show.
Ruby has grown into a real beauty. Her coat is a lush red with a black overlay which looks almost Sable. It is hard to capture the color variations and highlights of her coat at the low resolution we need for the website. Preston is from the prestigious "Ralines" line which began the whole English Cream line of Champions. These puppies will be EXTRAORDINARY. We expect some show quality English Creams and some exceptional red/creams. This will be a "pricey" litter but worth it if you are looking for a high quality English Cream line puppy.
You hear a lot about temperament but until you EXPERIENCE the differences you can not appreciate them. Preston is the original "mellow fellow". He is sweet and never fights with others. Even as a little tyke, NOTHING fazed him. If the other puppies growled at him he simply ignored them. He was not intimidated; it was as though it was beneath him to bother to reply. You could hold him in your lap and pet him or watch TV and he would stay still. Yet he can play fetch with the best of them.
Just as Dapple and Pepper are mild, Ruby is ACTIVE. She is by far the most agile of all of our dogs. She can out run and out maneuver them all. She is so fast they have to climb up on the couch and jump down to ambush her. She is totally non violent and is dominated by all of the other dogs in the pack. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She is wonderful but does not like to hold still. Although she was my favorite from the beginning she does not sleep on the bed with us yet. She does not like to sit still and be petted, she likes to play. She mothers all the other dogs and sees to it they have the cleanest ears in the county. She is a wonderful dog and, now at one year, is calm enough to take naps with Roberta after an exhausting race with Preston around the back yard. Her sons will be a small boy's best friend. She is loving and she shows it.
There are no guarantees and individual puppies can vary greatly but we expect their puppies to be a mix of ACTIVE and MATURE. By MATURE I mean they will hold still to let children pet them and behave well very early. Many puppies are so active and silly they can not be much company for a year or longer. Active puppies are good for young children because they wear each other out but are harder to deal with for the first year. Even mature puppies have abundant energy and can play and fetch, etc. it is just that they will calm down and hold still. Active puppies are almost always in motion. With Ruby being active and Preston being mellow we expect to get some of each. These two dogs also compliment each other physically. Ruby is light and petite. Preston is typical of the English Cream, large boned, gangly as a puppy and didn't learn how to steer his caboose for a couple of months.
We try very hard to give each owner a realistic expectation of the puppy they adopt. We do not have any mean or ill tempered dogs. We will not tolerate a trouble maker and certainly will not include it in our breeding program, no matter what the pedigree. Some bad or aggressive behavior is learned and some inherited, we try to start you with the best temperament possible to give you that head start.
