Why DASHaHOUND Puppies are Special

I spend a lot of time explaining what makes a DASHaHOUND puppy so special, so I thought I would explain it here.  If you read the testimonials you get a feel for the fact that our puppies really are special.  Here is why:

  1. We start with dogs with great pedigrees who are not the product of line breeding.  For a dog to have a lot of champions in the pedigree is one thing but for a dog to have a lot of champions without having the same dogs listed over and over is quite another.  What that means is there is a very wide gene pool of good confirmation.  We are not trying to get a puppy with uncle Harry's great nose, all of the dogs ancestors have great noses, and so forth.  What confirmation means to you is your puppy looks like a Dachshund is supposed to look.  No sagging back, no crooked tail, no goofy looking head and so forth.  Conformation is more than looks.  All our dogs have deep sternums and long rib cages to support their backs.  A Dachshund with a shallow sternum and short rib cage is much more likely to get hurt launching off the back of the couch.  No Dachshund should do that but if yours does you will be glad he or she has the support necessary to improve the chances no damage will be done.
  2. We don't line breed which shrinks the gene pool.  We have lots of nice healthy genes to work with.
  3. No matter what we pay for a dog, if it is ill tempered it is never bred.  We simply do not tolerate it in our lines.
  4. We do favor fat little feet, long wavy ears, deep sternums, long rib cages, straight backs and lean overall healthy dogs.
  5. We feed them the best dog food we can find.  We feed exclusively Best Breed Puppy dog diet for life.  It is a perfect balance of protein, very little filler and all the vitamins and suplements you or I might take.
  6. The puppies are born in our home in a spare bedroom which is kept at 75 degrees.  The newborn pups can't regulate body temp.  Roberta is usually up all night delivering them and doing everything possible to insure their survival and comfort.
  7. After a few days them move into a dedicated whelping kennel with climate control set to 75 degrees and a doggie door with patio and yard for mom.
  8. At 4 weeks they come back inside the house.  We have two areas fenced in with plastic fencing, one in the dining room and one in the living room.  Both have doggie doors which open onto a shaded patio and then to a gravel play yard.  THIS IS A CRITICAL TIME.  The puppies play with, older puppies, a gentle Australian Shepher, a chiuaua, adults, children and tons of other dogs.  They end up fearless and friendly.  We have NEVER had one of our dogs bite or even nip anyone.  They are used to men with beards, women, dogs, kids and whatever comes along.  They are also potty trained to a doggie door. (They have no experience with carpet though and if you turn them loose in a large home they will not know what area is their "home" and will not know to "notify" you when they have to go.  So, we get them started but you will have a little training to do.  THIS PROCESS IS CALLED SOCIALIZING AND DETERMINES WHAT THE PUPPY WILL BE LIKE FOR THE REST OF ITS LIFE.  A TIMID PUPPY WHO IS AFRAID OF THINGS WILL LIKELY NEVER GET OVER IT AND IT IS FEAR WHICH CAUSES THEM TO BITE.   That is wy you read in the testimonials of owners who's vets are amazed that their Dachshund let's them turn it upside down, give it shots and never even growls at them.

Yes, a DASHAHOUND puppy is special and we aren't the only ones who think that.  :-)  Now you know some of the reasons why.
